One on Jack's lifetime goals was to do an IBA Saddle Sore 1000, (1000 miles in under 24hrs), in each state. He did not accomplish his goal due to a heart attack.
As a tribute to Jack, the long distant community has organized a SS1000 this coming Saturday, Oct 15th. A minimum of 50 riders, each assigned to a different state, will do an in-state SS1000. A video of riders using SPOT, pictures of riders with a state sign, will be presented to Jack's wife as a token of respect from the Long Distant riders. IBA will issue a Jack Shoalmire SS1000 certificates to all riders.
I was picked to do Wisconsin. ( BHB on SPOT for Bien Hoa Bob)

I met Jack on an Iron Butt Sunrise to Sunset event. Most Eastern part of Maine to most western part of Washington state, using only USA roads. I think we had 72 hours to accomplish the ride. At the pre-ride dinner, Vietnam came up. He gave me the usual Army versus Air Force rant, with a big smile. Of course, I had my own come backs. It was good to talk with another veteran.
