The SS Emidio was an oil tanker sailing from Seattle, Washington on its way to San Pedro, California when it was sunk by a Japanese submarine off Cape Mendocino. The date was December 20, 1941, just 13 days after the attack on Pearl Harbor and represented the first domestic maritime casualty of World War II. Five crew members were killed after the ship was hit by torpedos and then shells from the submarine’s deck guns. The rest of the crew fled to safety in lifeboats. The wreck drifted north to Crescent City and broke up on the rocks near this monument.

Bonus stops: There are plenty of things to do in Crescent City and nearby: the Battery Point Lighthouse Museum, bed & breakfasts, a drive-thru redwood tree in nearby Klamath, great motorcycle roads everywhere.
