This Marines memorial is at the entrance to the Marine Corps Base-Hawaii (MCBH) and has stunning views of the bay and mountains to the west. It is a replica of the Joe Rosenthal-inspired memorial in Newington, Connecticut, and is slightly different from the memorials in Arlington, Virginia and Harlingen, Texas. It holds a special place in Hawaiians' hearts since Oahu is one of three places that Marines trained for the taking of Mt. Suribachi on Iwo Jima. The other two places were the Island of Maui and Guam.

Contrary to popular belief, the flag raising on Mt. Suribachi didn’t signal victory over the Japanese that day, but was an important rallying symbol that brought the hard-fought victory 31 days later. Read more on the Harlingen, Texas writeup.

Bonus stop: Next to the memorial are several static displays of Marine aircraft and other military equipment.
