The Fire Academy sits where the Great Chicago Fire began in (or at least near) O'Leary's barn. In the 1870s, this area was densely populated with wooden structures and there are still conflicting reports about the cause, including one claiming the fire was caused by a meteor shower. One thing is certain: it wasn't the result of a cow kicking over a lantern, a story that a Chicago Tribune reporter later admitted to fabricating.

The fire lasted eight days, covered four square miles and killed 100s of people. In the aftermath, Chicago built one of the leading fire departments in the country, which it still is today.

Bonus stops: Across the driveway is a memorial honoring Chicago firefighters who have died in the line of duty.

Nearby is the Jim's Original polish sausage stand, just a few blocks away under the freeway. Open 24/7. For something a little more offbeat, even for Chicago, check out the "family biker bar," Twisted Spoke.
