The Pacific Coast Air Museum at the Santa Rosa Airport, has a new exhibit: the first F-15A Eagle scrambled in response to the World Center attacks. It was dedicated last year on September 11.

From the PCAM website: “This interpretive exhibit has been designed to honor those who perished and all those who responded to the events of 9/11. It will also tell the little-known story of heroism and crucial decisions made ‘on the fly’ by pilots and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) controllers on that fateful day in our nation’s history.”

The story is incredible as related by the pilot, Lt. Col. Tim Duffy of the 102nd Flight Wing Massachusetts Air National Guard, faced with instructions to shoot down any civilian airliner that veered off course.

When you visit, ask to shake the hand of the executive director of the museum, Col. David Pinsky (USAF-retired), a command pilot with over 5,500 hours in various aircraft, including over 1,000 hours of combat time during 614 missions in the Vietnam War. Col. Pinsky was the driving force behind the First Responder exhibit, bringing it to Santa Rosa and restoring the plane back to it’s 2001 condition.

Also in the area: Besides being near California's famed wine country there are a host of fine riding roads and eateries, including Guy Fieri's Johnny Garlic's, unforgettable Thai food at SEA Thai Bistro, and hearth-fired baked goods at Wild Flour Bakery in nearby Freestone. And then there's Perry's Deli #10.

Perry's Deli #10 on Sebastopol Road in Santa Rosa serves up some of the finest sandwiches, including a Tri-Tip that's marinated five days, slow-cooked over mesquite, and VERY thinly sliced. Owner Steve also makes some of the best BBQ sauce that you'll ever lay your lips to. It's no wonder that many of Santa Rosa's finest claim this place as a second home!
