The Buffalo Soldier Memorial is a monument to the soldiers of the 9th and 10th US Cavalry regiments. It was placed in Pawnee Park, where these soldiers’ children would have played, as it is near the location of the segregated family housing assigned to the black soldiers with families.

The units faced blatant discrimination from the military, however 27 soldiers of these 2 units were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. In the west, besides escorting and protecting settlers, stagecoaches, railroad workers, fighting Indians, the units laid hundreds of miles of telegraph wire.

The regiments did not just serve in the American west. They served in Cuba, Mexico, the Philippines and in the European Theater during WWII. The 10th Cavalry stormed and captured San Juan Hill in the Spanish-American war. They saw action starting with the Indian Wars and ending with WWII when both units were deactivated while in North Africa in March 1944.

Ft Leavenworth, in Leavenworth, Kansas also has a Buffalo Soldier Monument, but it is located on the base. Access to the base at times is restricted and motorcyclists are subject to military base guidelines of helmet, boots, gloves, hi-viz vest or jacket, valid license and proof of insurance.

The memorial above is not inside Ft. Riley, so is not subject to military base guidelines.
