This memorial contains all of the names of the firefighters killed in the line of duty in Missouri since 1838. Originally to be dedicated in 2002, the first praying firefighter sculpture was en route to Missouri traveling through New York City on 9/11/2001, when it's trip was cut short. On September 19th, the New York Fire Department accepted the original as a gift from the Missouri firefighters to honor the 343 firefighters who died in the World Trade Center. It now rests at 8th Avenue and 41st Street in NYC, probably the first permanent memorial to the events of 9/11.

Also in the area: Just down the road is the town of Fulton and Westminster College. There in the Chapel (which is open to visit), Winston Churchill gave a famous speech, coining the phrase “Iron Curtain” for the first time. As Missourians, we all heard this speech growing up, because it was said to start the Cold War.

Outside the Chapel is a large original section of the Berlin Wall. Well worth the stop.
