“Dry docked” in a concrete-lined bermed ditch across from the Albacore Museum, you’ll find the first Naval submarine to feature the cylindrical underwater hull design that became the standard for sub designers the world over (previous submarines were surface vessels that could submerge – the Albacore and its successors are underwater vessels that can surface).

Built in the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, the Albacore was the father sub for the nuclear powered submarine force. The Albacore set the submarine speed record at a classified speed that exceeded 40 mph and could outrun a modern nuclear sub over short courses.

The sub is open for self-guided tours showing how its crew of 55 lived and worked daily until 5 during the summer and carries a nominal fee (about $5).

Also in the area: Also on the grounds is a memorial garden commemorating submarines lost in WWII and the Cold War.

While in Portsmouth, check the tide tables, leave the bike at Hilton State Park and walk out onto the General Sullivan Bridge – there you will be able to watch the second most extreme tidal flows in the world (the famous Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia has the highest tides).

With a name like Smuttynose, it's hard to ride through Portsmouth without a stop at the brewery, take a tour and grab a six pack of one of their special brews to enjoy when your ride is done.

Or if a glass from New Hampshire's premier craft brewery isn't to your liking, stop at Popovers on the Square for a sandwich and if you're lucky and they're baking, get a slice of Portsmouth Orange Cake, a light sweet spongecake that is a New Hampshire summer tradition.
