The town of Greenwich has changed little in the 300 years since the flag of Britain flew over it. In the winter of 1774, the American colonies were struggling to define their future relationship with Great Britain. The British tax on tea had sparked the 1773 Boston Tea Party, and the harsh response, to close the port of Boston, lead the First Continental Congress meeting in Philadelphia. Congress's non-importation, non-exportation agreement asked colonists not to buy or sell goods from the mother county as a way of putting economic pressure on England.

Not far from this spot, on the dark night of December 22, 1774, some of the townspeople from Greenwich demonstrated their agreement with this recommendation by burning a cargo of British tea that the British had snuck into town.

Some of the residents noticed the shipment and storage of the cargo in a British sympathizer’s cellar, and at night seized it and took it to a nearby field where they burned it. Score one for the American Patriots.

Also in the area: Keep an eye out for 24-hour diners that serve a delicious late-night snack of Disco Fries and frosty mug of root beer.
