In 1900, Jim Butler went looking for a donkey that had wandered off during the night. When he found it, he picked up a rock to throw at the animal, but noticed it was unusually heavy. And that triggered the 2nd biggest silver strike in Nevada history.

Several mines later, in 1917, an underground fire started in the Belmont mine, which killed 17 miners. “Big” Bill Murphy went down into the mine several times, each time dragging out survivors, but on the last trip, he failed to return.
