This monument to “the memory of the brave men who died that their country might live” is Rhode Island’s premier Civil War monument. This magnificent monument (nearly 3 stories tall) was designed by the same sculptor who created the Columbus Doors in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda in Washington DC. The four bronze figures representing the infantry, artillery, naval and cavalry veterans were sculpted in Rome before being cast in Germany and then shipped to Rhode Island for assembly.

Plaques on the pedestal list the names of those Rhode Isanders who died in the war. Most especially notable is a plaque honoring the 1st Rhode Island Regiment and 14th Rhode Island Heavy Artillery (Colored) who fought in the Civil War; or as the plaque states “War of the Rebellion.”

Also in the area: Providence is also the birthplace of the classic American Diner. In 1872 Walter Scott sold sandwiches and coffee from a horse-drawn wagon outside the Providence Journal. Ten years later, Anne Haven hitched horses up to the first Haven Brothers Diner wagon. Today, you'll find the successor to that 1888 wagon in the current steel wagon now towed nightly by a truck to its historic spot in front of City Hall at 4:30PM. You can get a Rhode Island "Coffee Cabinet" along with dog and fries until 5AM when the wagon is taken away to get ready for its daytime home on Spruce Street (11AM-4PM). The Coffee Cabinet is also known as a coffee frappe or coffee shake and was born, like the diner, here in Providence.

If your trip takes you through Providence at other hours, stop at the Liberty Elm Diner in nearby Pawtucket. Recognized as a landmark on the National Historic Register, the Liberty Elm is also acknowledged as the best diner food in Rhode Island.
