This Lexington’s predecessor, the USS Lexington (CV-2), nicknamed the "Gray Lady" or "Lady Lex," was an early aircraft carrier of the United States Navy. She was the lead ship of the Lexington class, though her sister ship Saratoga was commissioned a month earlier. She was also the fourth of five Navy ships to carry the name "Lexington." Originally designed as a “Battle Cruiser,” she was converted into one of the Navy's first aircraft carriers during construction, entered service in 1928, and was sunk in May, 1942 at the Battle of the Coral Sea.

The USS Lexington (CV-16), an Essex-class ship, is here in Corpus Christi and was commissioned in 1943 and decommissioned in 1991. It served in several campaigns in the Pacific Theater in WWII and received the Presidential Unit Citation and 11 battle stars. After that, she spent 30 years as a training carrier (CVT) on the east coast.

The onboard museum is open 7 days a week, 9am-5pm and includes 20 different restored aircraft, from a 1934 N3N-3 biplane to an F-18 Hornet.
