Fredericksburg was the boyhood home of Admiral Chester Nimitz, and if you have time to smell the roses, this is a quality museum experience that is worthy of a whole weekend. There are two parts, one of which is an outdoor theater where, on selected weekends, a two hour presentation and firing of WW2 weapons reenact the landing on Tarawa. You’ll see the only operational WW2 flamethrower in the U.S.

A block away are the main museum buildings, including George H.W. Bush Gallery, the Admiral Nimitz Museum, the Nimitz Steamboat Hotel, a classic Japanese garden (a gift from the Japanese people to Admiral Nimitz), and a Memorial Courtyard with more than 2000 plaques, honoring personnel who served in the Pacific Theater.

The area around Fredericksburg also has some of the best motorcycle riding in Texas. Willow City Loop, the Vintage Motorcycle Museum in Vanderpool and the Three Sisters, Highways 335, 336 and 337. There is just too much in Fredericksburg to mention and a plethora of excellent places to eat. German beer gardens, shopping, wineries and motorcycling roads, maybe a week would be in order!

If you have an Iphone, Mad Maps has an application with maps of these areas.

Recommended place to stay: If you want to feel like a WW2 fighter pilot in the Pacific Theater, you gotta stay at The Hangar Hotel. Complete with 40's style furnishings, army blankets on the bed, a Pacific Island stylized Officers Club/Dance Hall and a 40's style diner which sits on the airport tarmac.
