The Alabama Veterans Memorial is more than just a park. A group of civic leaders and concerned citizens banded together to present a message from all Alabamians, recognizing the price of freedom and peace.
From the parking area, it’s a short walk to the memorial site. Amid peaceful woods, you can peruse the names of Alabamians lost to war. A timeline in the Memorial walkway, behind the columns, outlines historic events of the 20th and 21st centuries. There you will also find the names of Alabama's 23 Medal of Honor recipients, with their stories on columns with artwork and letters. Although plans are in place to continue development of Liberty Park, what is already in place is a fitting tribute to the contributions Alabama veterans have made to preserve our nation's freedom.

Also in the area: Up the road a bit is the original Golden Rule BBQ, Alabama’s finest ‘que and voted one of the 100 places to eat before you die (doesn’t that say it all?). The Williams family opened the first Golden Rule way back in 1891, not far from its current location in Irondale. Through the years, few things have changed on the menu and the BBQ beef, pork, chicken, or ribs, is as good as it gets. The address is 2506 Crestwood Blvd., Ironwood, AL and they are open Monday-Thursday 10:30AM to 8:30PM; Friday-Saturday, 10:30AM to 9PM; Sunday 11AM to 8PM. Closed holidays.

Should you need to walk off some the food from the Golden Rule, continue west to Exit 140 off I-20 to the famous Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum. With over 600 motorcycles on display at any time, it’s well worth the $15 admission to wander through and view the many makes and models…..you might even see your very first ride.
