Mountainous areas are beautiful to visit and beautiful to live in, but in the southwest, these areas have proven especially dangerous to the brave men and women of the wildfire crews. This is just one of several memorials erected by grateful citizens in this particularly beautiful part of Arizona, the White Mountains. The marker thanks the crews that, during a 36-hour shift, created a 14-mile long burnout that helped to save several communities.

The memorial is dedicated to Rick Lupe, a 20 year veteran who died on June 19, 2003, less than a year after the Rodeo-Chediski fire. He was badly burned during a prescribed burn and walked ½ mile to where he was picked up by a helicopter. A tribute had been earlier scheduled to honor him on June 21, 2003, and after his death, the community went on with the tribute to their local hero.
