Erected by the Women’s Titanic Memorial Association, the Titanic Memorial honors the men who gave their lives so that women and children might be saved during the sinking of the Titanic. Proving that even everyday men can be heroes, the memorial is inscribed:

TO THE BRAVE MEN WHO PERISHED
IN THE WRECK OF THE TITANIC
APRIL 15 1912
THEY GAVE THEIR LIVES THAT WOMEN AND CHILDREN
MIGHT BE SAVED
TO THE YOUNG AND THE OLD, THE RICH AND THE POOR
THE IGNORANT AND THE LEARNED
ALL WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES NOBLY
TO SAVE WOMEN AND CHILDREN

ERECTED BY THE
WOMEN OF AMERICA

Also in the area: If you’re riding the Tour of Honor here in May, check out the Dragon Boat Festival on the Potomac in Georgetown. And if you happen to be here in late May, consider taking part in the Ride to the Wall events with over 350,000 motorcyclists participating (2008 census).

Whether here in May or not, take to the cobblestone streets and enjoy this famous section of exclusive DC and its shops, restaurants and college (Georgetown University is here) nightlife.
