Little known outside Delaware except on the state quarter, Caesar Rodney was a pivotal person in the country’s history.

Rodney was one of three members of the Delaware delegation to the Continental Congress. Although gravely ill when he heard that the other two delegation members were deadlocked on the question of independence, he rode 70 miles through the night and thundering rainstorms to arrive in Philadelphia the morning of July 2, 1776 just as voting was beginning. His vote for independence broke the deadlock, leading to the unanimous approval of the Declaration of Independence and the birth of the United States.

When casting his vote and Delaware’s as well, he stated that history might not remember him for voting for the cause of independence for which he was an avid proponent, but it would surely remember the man who by a dissenting vote would prevent free men from realizing their liberty and force them into eternal subjugation to the English Crown. With his vote, he insured the cause of liberty -- without his vote, the world would have been a far different place.

Also in the area: Nearby Brandywine Park is the home of the Brandywine Zoo and the African American Medal of Honor Recipients Memorial. During September, the park also hosts the Brandywine Festival of Arts.
