When you see the beautifully restored and maintained 8” Howitzer you'll know you have arrived at this TOH location!

The howitzer and it's info plaque are alone the worth the stop, but it's the rest of the park that causes one to slow down and take in the meaning of “We shall not forget.” The park is appropriately placed next to a large school, helping to educate the local youth that freedom isn't free.

Leading from the howitzer is a walkway to a large stone wall upon which are engraved the names of Towns County citizens who served in the military, broken down by branch of the service, and a special panel containing the names of those who served in combat.

After reading the names engraved on the stone wall, continue to the central garden of the park. Here you will find several more memorials, but what really grabs your attention are the individual bronze plaques for Towns County citizens who were Killed In Action in WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam and more. Each plaque contains not only the name and service information of the person killed, but a photograph of the individual. It is these photos that grab your attention.

This is a nice memorial park and well worth the visit. Plan to spend a little time with the individual photos and ponder the saying, “Freedom is not free.”

Also in the area: Motorcycle roads! For those that live in the area, you know that some of the very best riding in the state, and possibly the entire country, is right here in the north Georgia mountains. But for those who have never been to north Georgia, here are a couple of great motorcycle-road recommendations. Take a look at the map!

1. Hiawassee-Dahlonega. From this ToH stop, ride east a few miles on HWY 76 to Hwy 17 south, to Hwy 180, then west all the way to Suches [Who needs “The Dragon” when you have Hwy 180?], from Suches turn east on Hwy 60 to Dahlonega. In Dahlonega there are several restaurants right on the town square to choose from. About 47 miles.

2. Hiawassee-Helen-Dahlonega. East on Hwy 76 from this ToH stop about 12 miles to Hwy 197 south, to Batesville [there's a sandwich shop at the intersection with Hwy 356], then take Hwy 356 southwest towards Helen [plenty of places to eat and stay here], pick up Alt 75 south [this intersection is just west the Hwy 356/Hwy 17 intersection], to Hwy 129 west, turn left on Hwy 19 south at Turner's Corner, and finally then take Hwy 60 to Dahlonega. In Dahlonega there are several restaurants to choose from right on the town square. About 65 miles.
