“Soaring to Glory” is a breathtaking sculpture of jet contrails reaching for the sky rests amongst the trees in New Hampshire’s War Memorial Park. Situated amongst dozens of other memorials to every branch of service and conflict of recent memory, the Air Force Memorial is a smaller sister to the National Air Force Memorial in Arlington, Virginia and its replica at the Air Force Academy in Colorado.

President George Bush said of the original, “This Memorial is a brilliant symbol of freedom and the spirit of flight. A soldier can walk the battlefields where he once fought. A marine can walk the beaches he once stormed. But an airman can never visit the patch of sky he raced across on a mission to defend freedom. And so it’s fitting that the men and women of the Air Force will have this Memorial, a place here on the ground that recognizes their achievements and sacrifices in the skies above.”

The artist made “air tangible” with the gleaming spires. No less in New Hampshire than outside our nation’s capital.

Also in the area: Laconia, home of New England's Bike Week, is a short ride over windy mountain roads, and on June 8-16 hosts the 90th Laconia Motorcycle Week and Rally. Not quite as big as Sturgis and Daytona, Laconia has become an annual destination for motorcyclists ever since they began “America’s Original Riding Rally.”
