Across from the Manchester Veterans Memorial Park, is a memorial statue of the Gold Star Mother, a woman who has given her country a gift more precious to her than her own life.

According to the artist, it “…captures the moment after she receives the dreaded Western Union telegram informing her of the loss of her son while in service to our country. The statue portrays a mother during World War II as she steadies herself on a plant stand bearing a photograph of her son and a toppled plant, symbolizing her world falling around her. Her face streaming with tears, bears a look of grief and shock. In her far off gaze, she is recalling her precious son's life and all that it held, now forever gone from her.”

Erected just two years ago (May 2011), this statue is the latest erected by the Gold Star Mothers Association across the country and a precursor to the recently approved legislation to raise a similar memorial in Washington D.C.

Also in the area: A short ride north to Hooksett will take the rider to the Old Man of the Mountain Replica – a one-quarter scale stone model of the famed cliffside outcropping now seen only on the New Hampshire State Quarter, license plates, and a bazillion knickknacks and souvenirs.

South, riders can visit the famed sculptor and artist Paul Andres’ public collection of sculpture on the grounds of his Art Institute in Brookline.
