After serving in the Umatilla Sheriff's Department for 18 years, Sheriff Tillman "Til" Taylor was shot and killed during a 1920 jail break from the Umatilla County Jail. Five prisoners had a smuggled gun that was used during the break out. All five escapee's were captured. Two received a sentence of life in prison and the others were sentenced to hang.

Local hero Sheriff Til saw the change from Wild West highwaymen to more sophisticated bank robberies and was one of the founders of the now internationally-famous Pendleton Roundup.

Also in the area: The acclaimed Hamley Steakhouse has great food and western atmosphere in the main restaurant, saloon or cafe. Considered a must-visit for those interested in western history and memorabilia.
