Overlooking Long Island Sound and the Point Judith Harbor of Refuge, three stones honor those fishermen from Point Judith who have lost their lives at sea. Three miles of stone breakwaters were built in the early 1900s to provide a refuge for ships traveling between Boston and New York and helped turn the Village of Galilee into one of the largest fishing ports on the east coast. Each year, more than 10 million pounds of fish are processed through the port headed to markets across the east.

Flanked by two stones listing the 56 fishermen from the Pt Judith area who have gone to sea never to return, the center stone is inscribed with the words of John Masefield’s Sea Fever:

I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel’s kick and wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking,
And a gray mist on the sea’s face, and a gray dawn breaking.
…And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over.

Also in the area: Fishermen’s Memorial State Park offers camping and nearby beach restaurants serving up chowder, lobster and Rhode Island oysters.

Lighthouse enthusiasts can visit the nearby Pt. Judith Light to check one more off their passport.
