The H.L. Hunley was the first successful submarine. Its capability as a war ship was demonstrated in July 1863 in Mobile, Alabama. Upon that success the Confederate leadership determined it would be of the greatest use in Charleston to attack the Union blockade. It arrived in Charleston in August 12, 1863.

During testing it sank and 5 of the crew of 8 perished. It was retrieved and during routine training exercises in October 1863 it once again sank and took the entire crew of 8 including its namesake Horace Hunley. The ship was retrieved again and in February 1864 it successfully sunk the warship Housatonic. However it never made it back to shore.

Also in the area: The Hunley replica is located at the entrance of the Charleston Museum, known as America's First Museum. Founded in 1763, the museum is the oldest in the nation and features a large collection of artifacts and displays of South Carolina's history.
