It's easy to look at the statues and memorials of the Tour of Honor to focus on those being honored and not give a thought to those through whose labor the monument came to be. In Barre, the Granite Capital of the World, this monument was erected to the people who craft the memorials and monuments we vist.

Beginning in the 1890's many gifted sculptors brought their talents to the Barre area from Italy. The apron clad figure of a sculptor with chisel and hammer in hand is 23 feet in height and weighs 43 tons. It was dedicated to sculptor Carlo Abate who came from Italy to Barre at the turn-of-the-century and established the first art school in which students could learn drafting, design and other skills associated with the granite industry. Naturally, the statue is carved out of Barre granite.

Also in the area: A tour of the Rock of Ages Quarry and internationally famous tombstone facility in Barre is somehow fitting.

The Trapp Family Lodge (the emigres who inspired the film the Sound of Music) is in nearby Stowe, Vermont. Or south of that, Waterbury is home to the Ben & Jerry’s Factory (great tour!) and to the east Cabot is the home of Cabot Cheese which also features a factory tour & tasting.
