The Forgotten Heroes Memorial was erected by the citizens of Moses Lake to honor the 87 servicemen killed on December 20th, 1953, while returning home from the Korean War for Christmas. The victims were part of a flight of 106 servicemen and 10 crew members aboard an Air Force C124 Globemaster departing from what was then Larson AFB. The men were chosen through a lottery to come home from the Korean theater for Christmas as part of “Operation Sleigh Ride.” The plane crashed on takeoff killing all but 29.

Larson AFB was deactivated in June 1960 and is now the Grant County International Airport.
