The city of Bayfield is named after Admiral Henry Wolsey Bayfield who was a Royal Navy Surveyor in Canada. He spent most of his life as a hydrographer charting Canadian waters, the Great Lakes, and the St Lawrence River. The U.S.S. Bayfield is also named after him.

The U.S.S. Bayfield (APA-33) began her service in 1943 and was involved in the invasion of Normandy, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, the Philippines, and other important assignments. She was in San Francisco preparing for the invasion of the Japanese islands when hostilities ended. After WWII, she was involved in the Korean war and decommissioned in 1968. The U.S.S. Bayfield monument is dedicated to all the men who honorably served aboard this great ship.

Also in the area: Next to the monument is a memorial to the local men and women who served their country in all wars.

Bayfield is a great little town to explore.  Take the ferry to the Apostle Islands, grab a bite to eat in town, or just sit in the park and enjoy the beautiful view of Lake Superior.
