John Colter (c.1774 – c.1813), born in Augusta County, Virginia, was a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. He is best remembered for explorations he made during the winter of 1807–1808, when he became the first known person of European descent to enter the region now known as Yellowstone National Park, and to see the Teton Mountain Range.

Colter spent months alone in the wilderness, and is widely considered to be the first mountain man.

Also in the area: Everyone should have a photo of themselves under the famous antler arches leading into this park, shouldn't they? And pay a visit to the famous Million Dollar Cowboy Bar across the street. Besides the huge collection of western memorabilia, there's an impressive display of animal mounts, nightly swing dancing, and more Jack Daniels is poured here than any other place in the Northwest. In early August, Master Distiller Jimmy Bedford visits to sign bottles during the annual Halfway to Sturgis parties here. Yee-haw!
